Helianthus are annuals or tuberous perennials that are native to the USA with simple, bright green, quill-like foliage, boasting large and flamboyant daisy-like flower heads throughout summer and into early autumn. Helianthus are best located to flower beds and borders within courtyard and cottage garden settings. You should expect to see Helianthus grow to an approximate height of 40cm (16”) and a spread of 30-40cm (12-16”).
Helianthus are best planted in soil that is fertile, humus rich and well-drained. Soil types include sand, chalk and loam within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area which attracts full sun, but they will also tolerate areas of part shade. At the time of planting, you may wish to supplement your soil with a light application of organic matter such as leaf mould or garden compost as this will enhance nutritional value and retain moisture levels for the young roots.
Helianthus will need to be watered deeply to encourage a healthy root system. Keep the soil consistently moist throughout active growth, reducing the volume during winter. There is little need to add fertiliser to your plants as this can be detrimental to the stems. Tall species may require a support for a short period to encourage a healthy form.
