Helianthemum are bushy or spreading evergreen shrubs, commonly referred to as ‘Rock Rose’. These shrubs produce a mass of saucer-shaped blooms and abundant yet simple foliage, adorning slender stems throughout spring and summer. Helianthemum are best suited to banks, slopes or used as groundcover within coastal, cottage and informal gardens. You should expect to see Helianthemum grow to an approximate height and spread of between 45-60cm (18-24”).
Helianthemum are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk, clay and sand within a neutral or alkaline PH balance. Helianthemum are best positioned in an area of full sun. Amend heavy soils with a generous amount of organic matter and mix thoroughly to improve drainage and growing conditions. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of your plant, spreading the roots out before settling into place. Space companion plants 60cm (24”) apart to allow room for plants to spread as they mature. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil.
Water Helianthemum regularly throughout active growth when the soil becomes dry to the touch and throughout periods of drought. Once established Helianthemum are a little more drought tolerant. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly whilst in growth to encourage better flowering and foliage performance. Once established and after flowering, prune Helianthemum by a third to maintain a tidy appearance.
