Hedychium are rhizomatous perennials with strong, erect unbranched stems that bear thick, slender lance-shaped foliage and a dense cluster of showy, fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers. They are best suited to flower beds or borders within a city, courtyard or coastal garden. You can expect to see Hedychium grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.5-2.5m (5-8’).
Hedychium are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance, thriving in a position of full sun or part shade. Amend the planting area with plenty of compost to improve the drainage and place your plants into position. Water thoroughly to settle into place.
Hedychium do require regular watering throughout active growth and during periods of drought. Once the flowering period has finished, cut back the stems to ground level. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of your Hedychium in autumn as this will provide some protection to your plants during the cold winter months.
