About Hebe

Hebe are compact evergreen shrubs or small trees with slight and often glossy leaves that are latched onto attractive, dark red stems. Vibrant funnels of tubular or salver-shaped flowers will revitalise your gardens throughout summer and autumn with a profusion of exotic colour. Native to New Zealand, Hebe are hardworking shrubs with an ‘ease of growth’ appeal. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. They will also make fantastic container plants. You should expect Hebe to grow to an approximate height and spread of between 20cm (8”) – 1m (40”), dependant on variety.

How to plant Hebe

Hebe are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk and loam within an alkaline and neutral PH balance. Plant Hebe at the same depth and width as the root ball leaving sufficient space between companion plants for them to spread. Amend the soil with organic matter or compost and mix in well, watering thoroughly and deeply. Hebe are best positioned in an area of full sun although they will tolerate part shade.

How to care for Hebe

Hebe are low maintenance shrubs that require little attention once established. Although this shrub does not require regular fertilisation you may wish to apply feed once a year prior to new growth. Deadhead spent blooms as this will encourage additional flowering. Trim Hebe back to about halfway to promote bushier and more compact growth. Water shrubs regularly during active growth and sparingly during the winter.

How to propagate Hebe

It is possible to propagate Hebe by seed sown in containers or by semi-hardwood cuttings during late summer or autumn.
