About Hamamelis

Hamamelis are deciduous shrub, native to China with broad, rounded leaves that display flamboyant shades of yellow, red and orange during the autumn and winter months. The blooms are set upon strong leafless branches. These shrubs look best in flower beds and borders within a cottage and informal garden setting. You should expect to see Hamamelis grow to an approximate height and spread of 4m (13’).

How to plant Hamamelis

Hamamelis are best planted in fertile, moist and well-drained soil of loam, clay or sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. A sheltered woodland area is the perfect environment for these shrubs to flourish and thrive, releasing a strong and fragrant scent that lingers. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of your plant, spreading the roots as you place into the ground. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle into position.

How to care for Hamamelis

Water Hamamelis thoroughly, especially during periods of drought. There is generally no need to prune Hamamelis, although you may wish to cut back dead or dishevelled branches – This should be undertaken whilst the plants are dormant.

How to propagate Hamamelis

It is possible to propagate Hamamelis by grafting in the winter, seed in the autumn or by softwood cuttings during the summer.
