Halesia are deciduous shrubs or small trees, native to eastern America. Simple, ovate leaves and white, pendant or bell-shaped blooms are held on to thick, dark branches. The delicate flowers are often followed by decorative winged fruits during the autumn to create additional interest in the garden often through to winter. Halesia are best suited to wildflower and low maintenance, architectural garden styles. Halesia will grow to an approximate height of 10m (30’) and a spread of 7m (23.3’).
Halesia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, clay and sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, amend the native soil with well-rotted garden compost and mix thoroughly. Gently position your Halesia into place and backfill the planting area, watering well to settle the soil. You may wish to stake Halesia at the time of planting to provide additional support as they begin to mature. These shrubs/trees are best positioned in an area of part shade or full sun.
Halesia should be watered thoroughly throughout active growth as they are intolerant of dry soil and conditions of drought. There is a possibility that Halesia may form multiple trunks, so ensure that you choose one as a central lead during the early stages of growth. It is recommended that you prune lower branches as this will provide a healthy shape and structure into maturity.
