Gleditsia are attractive, deciduous trees with a rounded crown of spiny branches and unobtrusive flowers that are often followed by large flattened seed pods. They are incredibly popular with birds and local wildlife who will nestle amongst their delicate foliage that colour change from light to dark green dependant on the season. They are also commonly referred to as Honeylocust. They are best suited to low maintenance gardens and will grow to an approximate height and spread of 8m (26.5’).
Gleditsia are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They should be planted during the autumn where a hole should be dug 2-3 times as wide and just as deep as the root ball, backfilling the soil into place and watering thoroughly. Gleditsia will need to be positioned in an area of full sun as this is where they will thrive best.
When the soil starts to dry out, you will need to make sure Gleditsia is well-watered keeping the soil moist and not waterlogged. Remove all dead and dying branches and cut all the way down to the main stem. Trim lower branches to help shape the crown of your tree and prune the limbs with one cut and thin out the branches when they become untidy and overcrowded. Once Gleditsia is better established, you should not need to undertake any pruning.
