About Gladiolus

Gladiolus are cormous perennial plants with sprays of fan-shaped foliage and spikes of funnel-shaped flowers. Gladiolus are best suited to flower beds and borders or used as cut flowers within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Gladiolus grow to an approximate height and spread of 1m (40).

How to plant Gladiolus

Gladiolus are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is the same depth and width as the root ball. Space companion plants 40cm (16) apart and mixing a generous amount of peat moss to the planting area, mixing thoroughly to keep the ground moist. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil into place. Gladiolus are best positioned in an area of full sun.

How to care for Gladiolus

Gladiolus are low maintenance plants once established. Lift plants when foliage dies back and discard old corms. Store new corms in a dry frost-free place until re-planting in the spring. In milder areas provide your plants with a thick dry winter mulch that may suffice for protection. Ensure you provide a layer of mulch in the spring to deter weeds and to retain moisture. Water regularly while the plant is still growing and through periods of dry weather.

How to propagate Gladiolus

It is possible to propagate Gladiolus from offsets.
