Garrya are fast growing and robust evergreen shrubs that are often referred to as the ‘silk tassel bush’, originating from the USA. These shrubs produce striking leathery leaves and small green flowers that hang elegantly in pendant-like fashion, to form a divine display during late winter and early spring. Garrya are best suited to wall side borders or alternatively used as hedging or partition screening within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Garrya grow to an approximate height and spread of 4m (13’).
Garrya are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Garrya will need protection from cold winds as this will burn the foliage - choose an appropriate site with adequate shelter from adverse weather conditions. They are best positioned in full sun if sheltered from intense heat although they are also tolerant of part shade.
Prune during early spring and remove any dead, old or damaged parts of your shrub. Neaten your shrub by cutting back slowly over 4 to 5 years to create a low framework. Whilst Garrya are young, they will require regular watering which can be reduced when they are fully established. Although not essential, you may wish to provide an annual feed of general purpose fertiliser during late winter.
It is possible to propagate Garrya by semi-hardwood cuttings.
