About Filipendula

Filipendula are herbaceous perennials with defined pinnate leaves that cover slender, dark red stems to complement an abundance of compact rosy-pink or white blooms during the summer. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within a cottage, informal or wildflower garden. You should expect to see Filipendula grow to an approximate height of 1.2 -1.5m (4-5’) and a spread of 60-90cm (24-36”).

How to plant Filipendula

Filipendula are best planted in fertile, humus rich and moist, well-drained soil of clay and loam. They will thrive within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance and are best positioned in an exposed or sheltered area of full sun or a position of part shade. Choose an appropriate site that will accommodate the mature size of your plant and dig a hole that matches the depth and width of your roots. Back fill with native soil and water thoroughly. You may wish to apply a layer of mulch consisting of animal manure to retain moisture levels and to suppress weeds.

How to care for Filipendula

If your plant has strong stems, there may be little need to stake. However, if your plant is positioned in an exposed area, you may wish to provide the stems with some extra support. There is no need to deadhead your plants as the faded flower heads will provide decorative interest as it slips into dormancy. Ensure that you keep your soil moist, especially during periods of drought and dry weather. You may wish to cut back the plants severely during late summer to retain a pleasing appearance.

How to propagate Filipendula

It is possible to propagate Filipendula by division during the autumn. These plants tend to spread at a rapid rate and division will help to control invasiveness.
