Exochorda are eye-catching, bushy deciduous shrubs that are more commonly known as the ‘Pearl bush’ with simple leaves and small flowers that fashion an abundance of delicate petals to form striking clusters during the spring or summer season. These plants make stunning container plants set within courtyard and cottage garden settings. You should expect your Exochorda plants to grow to an approximate height of 2m (7’) and a spread of 2.5m (8’).
Exochorda are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Locate your plants in an appropriate site that will accommodate its mature size. Dig a hole that is the same depth as the root ball and twice as wide so the roots can spread evenly. Water thoroughly to settle the soil back in place whilst encouraging a healthy root system. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade where they will thrive to optimum health.
It is recommended to apply a slow release balanced fertiliser alongside a generous layer of mulch consisting of well-rotted garden compost during the spring. Remove old and damaged shoots as this will increase the amount of flowers that can be produced during the following season.
It is possible to propagate Exochorda by softwood cuttings in the summer or by seed during the autumn.
