Eupatorium are bushy annuals, herbaceous perennials or evergreen shrubs with tiny cylindrical blooms on tall, rigid stems and feathery green foliage. They are a great shrub to provide additional structure to borders in wildlife, cottage and informal gardens. The late summer colour that Eupatorium display are highly attractive to butterflies and other wildlife. Eupatorium will grow to an approximate height and spread of 75cm (30”).
Eupatorium are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, loam or sand within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. Most species of Eupatorium prefer to be planted in damp areas of the landscape i.e. close to ponds and wetlands. Locate your plants in a position of full sun or part shade, taking care that they are sheltered from afternoon sunlight, as this may scorch the leaves.
Feed your Eupatorium with a diluted half-strength balanced fertiliser on a weekly basis during the growing season. You may wish to deadhead any spent flowers in the spring before they go to seed if you wish to prevent new plants from sprouting whilst undertaking a general tidy up. Alternatively, the decorative seed heads will produce winter interest.
It is possible to propagate Eupatorium by division during the spring time.
