Euonymus are deciduous or evergreen shrubs or small trees with dense, bushy foliage that hold delicate clusters of subtle flowers throughout the summer. Some varieties display exquisite autumnal colour followed by small and often colourful fruits. Euonymus are best suited for use as hedging or creating a partition in low maintenance, wildlife or informal garden settings. Dependant on variety, you should expect your shrub/tree to grow to an approximate height and spread of 2.5-4m (8-13’). Please take care when handling Euonymus, as they can be dangerous if ingested into your system.
Euonymus are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of the root ball amending the existing soil with plenty of organic matter and mix together thoroughly. Place your Euonymus into the ground and back fill the soil, firming into place whilst providing a thorough watering to settle into place. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade where they will thrive to optimum effect.
Whilst Euonymus are young you should maintain a regular watering schedule until they are fully established. Once Euonymus reach maturity, you should only need to water your plants during periods of drought. You may wish to prune your shrub to neaten its overall shape and size by cutting the top third of growth. This will also encourage new growth, helping it to create a bushier habit.
