Eucryphia are evergreen or deciduous shrubs or trees with simple leaves and large saucer-shaped flowers that flourish during summer or autumn. Eucryphia are best suited to flower beds or borders within a low maintenance and architectural garden. You should expect to see Eucryphia grow to an approximate height of 12+ metres (40’) and a spread of 2.5-4m (8-13’).
Eucryphia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam and sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is the same width as the root ball. Space companion plants 40cm (16”) apart and mixing a generous amount of peat moss to the planting area, mixing thoroughly to keep the ground moist. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil into place. Eucryphia are best positioned in an area of full sun with shelter from cold drying winds.
It is important to retain moisture levels in your soil throughout active growth. You may wish to apply a layer of mulch to keep your plant cool and moist. There should be no need to prune your plant unless it is to improve its overall shape and structure.
It is possible to propagate Eucryphia by semi-ripe cuttings during the summer or by overwintering in a cool greenhouse.
