About Eucomis

Eucomis are bulbous perennial plants that are native to Northern and Southern Africa. An abundance of strap-shaped leaves and rigid stems display dense clusters of exotic and tiny star-shaped blooms that are held on leafy bracts from late summer to early autumn. These plants look fantastic in flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal gardens. Alternatively, these plants will thrive in pots and containers. You should expect Eucomis to grow to an approximate height of 75cm (30”) and a spread of 45cm (18”).

How to plant Eucomis

Eucomis bulbs are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Plant each bulb 30cm (12”) apart and at a depth of 20cm (8”). Make sure that they are positioned in an area of full sun to produce the most blooms; alternatively, they will equally thrive in part shade. Water your Eucomis thoroughly at the time of planting to settle the soil in place and encourage a healthy root system.

How to care for Eucomis

You may wish to feed Eucomis with an organic fertiliser during the early spring time. If planted in exposed areas that are prone to wind and adverse conditions, your plants may require staking. In late autumn, apply a generous layer of mulch in the form of composted bark as these plants dislike winter wet. There is no need for pruning but old and dead leaves should be removed to retain an attractive and healthy plant. These plants are generally pest free, although slugs may be attracted to new and young shoots.

How to propagate Eucomis

It is possible to propagate Eucomis by seed that can be sown during the autumn or spring. Alternatively, you can remove the offsets in the spring time.
