About Erodium

Erodium are annuals, perennials or sub-shrubs, some being evergreen. Glossy dark foliage adorns dark red-brown slender stems and are embellished with gorgeous 5 petalled flowers during the summer and early autumn. They are native to the Pyrenees and are best located to gravel or rock gardens. You should expect to see Erodium grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm (20”).

How to plant Erodium

Erodium are best planted in well-drained, gritty soil of loam, chalk and sand within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. Amend soils with additional sand or grit if you need to and apply to the base of the planting hole. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice as wide as the root ball and gently firm into place. Water thoroughly to settle the soil. Erodium loves to be positioned in a full sun but will also tolerate part shade.

How to care for Erodium

Once Erodium are established, they are easy to care for and low maintenance. Deadhead regularly to encourage persistent and healthy growth throughout their flowering period. Erodium generally require a minimal watering schedule unless there is a period of drought, where watering should be increased to keep plants healthy.

How to propagate Erodium

It is possible to propagate Erodium by basal stem cuttings, division, or by seed as soon as they are ripe.
