Erigeron are annuals, biennials or perennials with thin, slender stems, simplistic foliage and crisp daisy-like blooms that flourish throughout summer. They are more commonly known as ‘Fleabane’ and are native to Northern America. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Erigeron grow to an approximate height of 25cm (10”) and a spread of 30cm (12”).
Erigeron are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, sand and chalk within acidic, alkaline and neutral PH settings. If you suffer with heavy soil, you should amend the planting area with grit and well-rotted compost, mixing thoroughly with the native soil to improve drainage. Water the planting area well to settle the soil in place and to establish a healthy root system. Erigeron should be planted in a sheltered position of full sun.
Once the flowering period is over, you should deadhead Erigeron and cut back to ground level. It is recommended that you provide a light feed during active growth, taking care not to overwater plants as they dislike excessive wet soil. This is also key during the winter.
