Erica are upright evergreen shrubs, most commonly referred to as ‘Heather’. They have needle-like leaves and panicles of small and often bell-shaped flowers that flourish throughout spring. Erica originates from South Africa and so are considered tender in the UK. They are best suited to city, courtyard and coastal gardens. Alternatively, they look fabulous when planted in pots and containers. You should expect to see Erica grow to an approximate height of 2.5m (8’) and a spread of 1m (3’).
Erica are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, clay, sand and chalk within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. As Erica require good drainage, it may be necessary to amend the planting area with a generous amount of mulch to improve heavy or moisture retentive soil. Erica are best positioned in full sun as the foliage colour intensifies.
Water your plants once or twice per week when the soil becomes dry, especially during immaturity. Ensure the soil is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once Erica are fully established, they are drought tolerant and rarely require thorough watering unless during prolonged periods of dry weather. You can prune Erica if they look misshapen and unkempt. Provide a light prune at that beginning of spring.
