Eremurus are herbaceous perennials that are often referred to as the ‘Foxtail Lily’. These beautiful plants form a rosette of tiny star-shaped flowers that are set upon long slender stems and lance-shaped leaves throughout the summer season. They are best planted within flower beds and borders within a courtyard, cottage and informal garden setting. You should expect to see your Eremurus grow to an approximate height of 150cm (60”) and a spread of 60cm (24”).
Eremurus are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Ensure that you place your plants in a position of full sun, sheltered from high winds and adverse weather conditions. Apply a layer of mulch at the time of planting to retain moisture levels and to keep the soil cool. It is recommended to plant Eremurus with late flowering perennials or tall grasses to supplement the short life expectancy of this plants foliage.
Once these plants are well established, they will require little care and attention, although will require regular watering. If planted within a windy site, Eremurus may require staking to retain good structure. Protection in the form of mulch is needed during the winter, with the recommendation of straw or leaves as appropriate materials. Keep these plants moist with a regular watering regime, especially during periods of drought.
