About Eranthis

Eranthis are small and compact tuberous perennials that provide a bright yellow carpet of colour throughout winter and spring. These flowers display buttercup-like blooms that are surrounded by a mass of lush-green foliage. Eranthis are best suited to flower beds or borders or as use for under planting within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect Eranthis to grow to an approximate height and spread of 5-8cm (2-3”).

How to plant Eranthis

Eranthis are best planted in moist, well-drained, humus rich and moderately fertile soil of chalk, clay, loam or sand during autumn or spring. If you have purchased Eranthis ‘in the green’ i.e. whilst they are still growing, they should be planted on arrival – either straight in the ground or in pots. Although they are tolerant of most PH levels, Eranthis will thrive better in an alkaline based soil type. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade, planted underneath deciduous trees or shrubs to a depth of around two inches. It is important to note that these plants will self seed and can become invasive if not controlled.

How to care for Eranthis

Once these plants are better established, they are easy to care for. Take care when handling these plants as they are poisonous and if ingested, may cause a mild stomach upset. Ensure that you water your plants regularly, especially in periods of dry weather to retain consistent moisture levels.

How to propagate Eranthis

It is possible to propagate Eranthis by seed sown in pots within a cold frame during the late spring or alternatively by separating tubers in the late spring or after flowering.
