Epipactis are herbaceous perennial plants that originate from Canada and Mexico. They are a variety of terrestrial orchid that boast deeply furrowed pale green leaves and tall rigid stems. These are finished off with striking, elegant blooms that flourish throughout the summer period. These plants will look great within flower beds, borders or containers in a woodland setting. They will grow to an approximate height of around 60cm (23”), with an indefinite spread measurement if left to grow without restriction.
Epipactis are best planted in moist well-drained soil of clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting you may wish to supplement native soil with a generous amount of compost to maintain good moisture levels in the summer and to promote better drainage during the winter. These plants are best positioned in an area that attracts partial sunlight as they will thrive better in shady spaces.
Epipactis require consistently moist soil to thrive and so therefore it is vital to water plants regularly throughout active growth and during prolonged periods of dry weather. Do not let your plants dry out at any time of the year, even during autumn and winter. You may wish to fertilise your Epipactis with slow release fertiliser during the spring.
It is possible to propagate Epipactis by seed or by division once the plants are well-established.
