Epimedium are rhizomatous perennials, native to Western and central China. They produce either evergreen or deciduous heart-shaped and lime green foliage alongside an abundance of blooms that provide a spectacular floral display during the spring. These versatile plants are fantastic along banks and slopes and within flower beds, borders and containers. You should expect to see Epimedium grow to an approximate height of 30cm (12”) and a spread of (24”).
Epimedium are best grown in fertile, moist, and well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, prepare the site well by incorporating a generous amount of organic matter and bone meal to the soil. Please take care to ensure that these plants are kept sheltered and are not planted in exposed areas that are prone to the cold and heavy winds. Epimedium will grow better in shady areas such as a woodland where they will thrive to optimum effect.
Epimedium dislike conditions of drought, therefore it is recommended that a layer of mulch is applied during the spring to retain moisture levels. Pruning is not necessary but you may wish to remove dead or dilapidated foliage during the spring. Soil should be kept moist throughout active growth, especially if planted in a sunny area and during periods of drought.
It is possible to propagate Epimedium by division during the autumn.
