About Ensete

Ensete are evergreen perennial plants with gorgeous thick but short stems, with elaborate foliage etched in fine veins of dark green, burgundy or black. Terminal clusters of cup-shaped flowers emerge, followed by dry banana-like fruits. They are best suited to wall side borders or as container plants within an architectural, city, courtyard or tropical garden. You can expect to see Ensete grow to an approximate height and spread of 2.5-4m (8-13’).

How to plant Ensete

Ensete are best planted in well-drained soil of loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance, thriving in a position of full sun or part shade. Amend the planting area with plenty of compost to improve the drainage and place your plants into position. Water thoroughly to settle into place.

How to care for Ensete

Apply a slow release fertiliser during the spring and water the soil well. Spread a generous layer of mulch around the base of the trunk. Remove any old foliage as they start to die off.

How to propagate Ensete

It is possible to propagate Ensete by seed.
