About Enkianthus

Enkianthus are deciduous shrubs with simplistic, dark-green leaves that change to gorgeous shades of red and orange during autumn. Attractive clusters of bell-shaped flowers are followed on during spring and summer. They are best planted in low maintenance, courtyard, cottage or informal gardens. You should expect to see Enkianthus grow to an approximate height and spread of up to 4m (13’).

How to plant Enkianthus

Enkianthus are best planted during autumn or spring in well-drained soil of loam, sand and clay within an acidic or neutral PH balance. They are happiest in part shade although will tolerate areas of full sun, providing there is shelter and protection from intense midday heat where the soil is kept moist. At the time of planting you may wish to apply a layer of mulch, mixing in well to the native soil. Water well after planting to settle the soil in place.

How to care for Enkianthus

It is not necessary to prune Enkianthus unless they outgrow the area in which they have been planted or unless they are mishapen and unkempt. Any pruning should be undertaken during spring. They are low-maintenance and are not bothered by pests or diseases. Ensure the soil is kept moist and cool during the height of summer.

How to propagate Enkianthus

It is possible to propagate Enkianthus by semi-hardwood cuttings.
