Edgeworthia are deciduous or evergreen shrubs with simplistic leaves and cinnamon coloured branches that hold an abundance of rounded, silky clusters of sweet and fragrant flowers from late winter to early spring. They are best planted in flower beds or borders within a courtyard or informal garden setting. It is possible for Edgeworthia to grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.5m (5’).
Edgeworthia are best planted in moist, well-drained humus rich and loam based soil within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. It is recommended that you should improve the soil conditions with organic matter to increase fertility levels – this can consist of compost, manure, shredded bark or straw. They will thrive in a position of full sun but will alternatively tolerate an area which receives part shade.
You may wish to apply a layer of mulch to the base of your Edgeworthia to retain moisture and to supress weeds. Fertilise your plants on an annual basis with a complete fertiliser. It is recommended that Edgeworthia are watered regularly during active growth and whilst young. Mature plants will require less watering until periods of dry weather emerge. It may be necessary to prune your shrubs to control growth and to remove dead or broken branches.
It is possible to propagate Edgeworthia by root greenwood and semi ripe nodal stem tip cuttings during summer.
