Drimys are evergreen trees or shrubs that are more commonly known as the Mountain Pepper. They originate from Western Argentina and have evolved over thousands of years – Today we are likely to extract essential oils from their aromatic bark and leaves. Drimys showcase striking, fragrant and leathery textured leaves with clusters of delicate, small, star-shaped blooms. Beneath the abundance of blooms and foliage, bright red stems shine through to make an attractive contrast of colour. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 3m (10’).
Drimys are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. It is recommended that they are positioned in an area of full sun although they will tolerate part shade. Drimys will need protection from adverse weather conditions, especially strong winds, so take care when choosing an appropriate site.
During the spring, it may be necessary to prune Drimys by removing dead, diseased or unsightly growth. This should be followed by an application of mulch consisting of well-rotted compost or manure. Drimys will need to be watered weekly when the weather is warm, increasing the volumes during periods of drought and decreasing over the winter.
