Disporum are rhizomatous perennials that originate from Asia and Northern India. Slim, arching stems bear large and highly attractive glossy, bright green leaves and bell-shaped clusters of pendula blooms throughout the spring. They are best suited to banks and slopes or used as underplanting for roses and shrubs within a cottage, woodland and informal garden setting. You should expect to see Disporum grow to an approximate height of 70-90cm (28-36”) and a spread of 50cm (20”).
Disporum are best planted in well-drained soil of clay or clay within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Choose your planting site carefully as Disporum are likely to spread quickly. Dig a hole as deep and twice as wide as the root ball, ensuring plenty of space is made between companion plants. Once in position, back fill the planting area and water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil into place. Disporum are best positioned in an area of part shade.
Disporum will require a regular watering schedule to grow and thrive, especially during their first season. This is also particularly crucial during periods of prolonged dry weather. Once your plants are well established, prune old stems and apply a slow release fertiliser before growth re-appears in spring.
