Dipsacus, more commonly known as Teasel, are herbaceous biennial or perennial plants with prickly stems and leaves with bristly flowers that are produced in the summer. They are native to Asia, African and Europe. The flowers are often cut and dried to be used in flower arrangements. The seedheads attract Goldfinches. You should expect to see your Dipsacus grow to an approximate height of up to 1.5m (5fT) to 2.5m (8ft), depending on the variety, and an approximate spread of up to 1m (3ft).
Dipsacus are unfussy on soil conditions or type, provided that itís moderately fertile, and are quite happy with an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance too. They are best suited to either a sheltered or an exposed position in sun or partial shade. It is perfect for an informal or wildflower planting style and they are also quite happy planted in borders and beds.
Dipsacus are very fast growing, so after the plant has flowered, cut the flowers off before the seeds ripen to control its vigorous growth to other parts of your garden.
It is possible to propagate Dipsacus by seed in autumn or spring.
