About Digitalis

Digitalis are biennials or short-lived perennials that form simplistically moulded leaves and clusters of tubular bell-shaped blooms that sit majestically upon stately slender stems. They create a fantastic structure to flower borders and beds when mixed amongst smaller plants and shrubs, and make the perfect addition to a wildflower meadow or cottage garden. You should expect to see your plants grow to a height of 1.2m (4’) and a spread of 45cm (18”).

How to plant Digitalis

Digitalis are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Amend the planting area with a generous layer of compost to improve drainage whilst providing additional nutrition. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil in place and to encourage healthy root development. Digitalis are best located in an area which receives full sun, although they are tolerant to part shade.

How to care for Digitalis

During the spring, it is important to apply a thin layer of compost, followed by a layer of mulch to aid in the retention of moisture and to prevent weeds. In periods of drought, water your plants thoroughly. Taller varieties and those that are planted in exposed areas will require staking to keep them upright. You can remove the central flower spike after the flowering period to encourage further flowering.

How to propagate Digitalis

It is possible to propagate Digitalis by seed sown in trays during late spring.
