Deschampsia are deciduous or evergreen, tufted grasses with linear or thread-like leaves and open flowering panicles that flourish during summer. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within a courtyard, coastal or cottage garden setting. You should expect to see Deschampsia grow to an approximate height of 1.5 metres (5’) and a spread of 1 metre (3’).
Plant Deschampsia in well-drained soil of sand, clay or loam within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Position in an area that receives full sun or part shade. Deschampsia are best planted in the spring - use a garden fork to tease and loosen the soil, digging around 30-38cm (12-15”) deep. Apply a layer of compost and mix in well, spacing your plants 30cm (12”) apart. Water thoroughly once in place to settle the soil.
Remove faded flower-heads during late winter before new growth appears. Cut back any dead or diseased foliage to improve both the health and appearance of your plants. In warmer regions, take note that these plants tend to self-seed freely. Where this is the case, remove unwanted seedlings as part of your border maintenance.
It is possible to propagate Deschampsia by division during early summer.
