Delosperma are mat-forming perennials that fashion bright and bold coloured daisy-like blooms that are set upon fleshy foliage during the spring and sporadically during the summer time. These low growing plants are ideal in a rock garden, in containers or will alternatively make excellent ground cover beneath taller plants and shrubs. They will grow to an approximate height of 10-15cm (4-6”) and a spread of 25cm (10”).
Delosperma are best planted in well-drained, sandy soil within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are intolerant to wet soil and thrive in a position of full sun. If planted in wet soil, these plants are likely to fail. It is also important to note that if planted in an area that is consistently dry, Delosperma can become invasive.
Once these plants are well established they will require very little attention. They will survive in periods of drought and require limited amounts of water throughout active growth. There is very little need, if any need at all, to use a fertiliser on these plants. Delosperma are intolerant to wet conditions and will need protection when these arise. Use a layer of mulch made up of straw during the winter months or use a covering to defend it from winter temperatures.
