Deinanthe are rare and unusual Chinese woodland herbaceous perennials. Tall arching stems are held high upon clump forming, slow spreading and hairy dark-green leaves. Downward facing blooms are formed in clusters of lavender-blue shades and flourish throughout the summer months. They are best planted in flower beds, borders and containers within a cottage, informal or woodland garden setting. You should expect to see them grow to an approximate height and spread of 30-45cm (12-18”).
Deinanthe are best planted in moist soil of clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is as deep and a little over the width of the root ball, allowing enough space between companion plants for your Deinanthe to spread. Back fill the planting area and water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil in place. Position Deinanthe in an area of part shade where the roots can be kept moist and cool. They will also tolerate full shade if necessary.
Ensure that Deinanthe are watered thoroughly during the summer months maintaining good levels of moisture within the soil. Watering can be reduced once the growing season has finished and as autumn and winter approach. Mulch your plants annually as this will prevent the root ball from drying out.
