About Daucus

Daucus are annuals or biennials, noble in their growth habit and often referred to as the ‘Wild Carrot’. Slender wiry stems and dense mounds of luxurious and feathery foliage are topped with branched umbels of small, delicate and textured blooms throughout summer. Daucus are best suited to flower beds and borders within a cottage or wildflower garden. Alternatively, they will make a fine addition as part of a bouquet or cut flower arrangement. You should expect to see Daucus grow to an approximate height of 90cm (36”) and a spread of 30cm (12”).

How to plant Daucus

Daucus are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, sand and chalk within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. Heavy soils can be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. Daucus are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sunlight. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of your plant, spreading the roots out before settling into place. Space companion plants 30cm (12”) apart to allow room for plants to spread as they mature. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply.

How to care for Daucus

Daucus will require regular watering throughout active growth and during periods of dry weather. You may wish to stake Daucus if they are exposed to adverse weather conditions. If you wish to contain your plant, deadhead the flowers before they have time to self-seed.

How to propagate Daucus

It is possible to propagate Daucus by seed during spring.
