Daphne are large shrubs or small alpines renowned for their stunning and highly fragrant blooms which flourish in both winter and spring, dependent on variety. Due to their strong scent, they are best planted alongside paths and doorways or positioned at the front of a border. Some varieties will also produce exquisite variegated or lush green foliage and berries. You should expect to see Daphne grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.2m (48") although this will differ depending on variety. Please take care when handling Daphne, as they can cause irritation to the skin.
Daphne are best planted in well-drained soil that is moisture absorbent and humus rich. They are versatile to a variety of soil types including loam, clay, chalk and sand of an alkaline, acidic or neutral PH balance. They are sensitive to periods of drought and do not tolerate waterlogging. Daphne prefer to planted in a position of full sun, although will tolerate part shade. Dig an appropriately sized hole to accommodate the depth and width of your Daphne, watering thoroughly once planted to settle into place.
Apply a generous layer of mulch during the spring with some well-rotted organic matter. This will keep the roots cool and retain moisture levels. It is important to keep the mulch away from the stem as this could damage it. Daphne will need protection from severely cold weather so add a covering to protect your plants from any harm. It is not recommended that established plants are moved. Daphne are also intolerant to pruning. Pruning of any kind should only be required when there is diseased or wayward growth. This should be undertaken during early spring or immediately after flowering.
It is possible to propagate Daphne by grafting in late winter or softwood cuttings and semi-ripe cuttings in mid or late summer. You may also wish to propagate by seed sown in containers as soon as they are ripe.
