Cyrtomium are evergreen or deciduous ferns with simple and often attractive, shapely and mottled leaves. They are native to Asia, Africa and the Pacific Ocean Islands. They are well suited to beds or borders within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Cyrtomium grow to an approximate height of 1.5m (5ft) and a spread of 1m (3ft).
Cyrtomium are best planted in a moist but well-drained humus-rich soil of sand, clay, loam or chalk within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of part or full shade.
During dry weather, keep the soil moist, making sure it is also well-drained. Remove any frost-damaged fronds in the spring.
It is possible to propagate Cyrtomium by spores sown in late summer.
