Cyclamen are tuberous perennial plants with dainty, nodding blooms that often fashion dark markings at their base and mottled green-silver foliage, providing a gentile and attractive plant that is perfect for naturalising beneath trees and shrubs in a wildflower or rock garden. They are perfect associated with other early-flowering plants such as snowdrops, winter aconites and Hellebores. You should expect to see Cyclamen grow to an approximate height and spread of 8cm (3”).
Cyclamen are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They prefer a position of part shade where the soil can be kept cool and moist. Cyclamen roots are non-competitive and will grow nicely amongst other plants and shrubs. Do not plant too deeply as they may not flower as effectively as they should.
Cyclamen dislike excessive feeding, so use leaf mould or compost to encourage healthy growth and development. When the leaves start to wilt at the end of the season, you can apply an extra layer of mulch to protect the roots over the warm summer season. Cyclamen are intolerant to excessive watering, so ensure that you are watering your plant when deemed necessary, taking care to not overwhelm the soil with undue moisture. Equally, do not let the soil dry out as this will deter your plant from growing to its optimum size.
