Crinum are bulbous perennial plants, some of which are evergreen. They produce an abundance of attractive and fragrant flower heads set upon long stems and strap-shaped foliage from late summer through to October. These hardy plants will make an impressive addition to borders, beds and containers in all types and styles of gardens. They can achieve an ultimate height of between 1-1.5m (3-5’) and a spread of between 0.1 – 0.5 metres (4-20”).
Crinum prefer to be planted in a position of full sun within a sheltered spot during the early spring. To develop appropriately during the initial stages of growth, you may wish to apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture levels. Crinum will grow at their best in moist and humus rich soil that is well draining. They are a versatile plant and will thrive in soil types such as chalk, sand or loam within acidic, alkaline or neutral PH levels.
Crinum are intolerant of waterlogging and winter wet so ensure that your plants are kept protected from frosts and adverse weather conditions. However, maintain a regular watering schedule during active growth and throughout periods of drought. Pinch off spent flowers as they fade where remaining buds should continue to produce more flowers. Prune old, dead or damaged foliage to retain a neat and pleasing appearance.
