About Cornus

Cornus are deciduous shrubs or trees that fashion brightly coloured stems and gentile clusters of tiny blooms from late spring, with some varieties showcasing bright red summer berries, an attractive feature for passing wildlife. The bright green and deeply veined foliage make a great addition to a shady woodland area or wildlife garden, turning a deep shade of red in the autumn. These plants can grow to an approximate height of 20cm (8”) and a spread of 45-60cm (18-24”) and make excellent groundcover.

How to plant Cornus

Cornus are best planted in loose yet moist soil of loam, clay or sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. It is recommended that you add a generous proportion of compost and peat moss to the planting hole to encourage this plant to grow at its best. Cornus are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.

How to care for Cornus

Cornus are incredibly heat sensitive, so ensure that they are watered regularly especially during periods of drought. Apply a thick layer of pine needles or mulch to the base of your plant for additional protection and moisture retention.

How to propagate Cornus

It is possible to propagate Cornus by division during early spring.
