About Cordyline

Cordyline are palm-like evergreen trees or shrubs that are native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific, where they mature to form attractive tufts of lance-shaped and leathery foliage that are often decorated with fragrant and cup-shaped flowers that are followed on by voluptuous berries. Cordyline have become a popular choice for coastal and city planting as they offer an exotic appearance and make an impressive display in containers. Cordyline will grow to an approximate height and spread of 1-1.5m (3-5’).

How to plant Cordyline

Cordyline are best planted in the spring within well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Cordyline should be positioned in an area of full sun, although a thorough watering schedule will need to be implemented if planted in exposed, sunny areas. Cordyline will alternatively tolerate part shade.

How to care for Cordyline

Cordyline will need to be watered when the soil becomes dry, decreasing the volume during the winter. They will require a monthly feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser from spring to late summer. As these shrubs are half-hardy, tie up the foliage in winter to reduce damage from adverse weather conditions and wrap the trunk in fleece. It is not vital that Cordyline are pruned, but it is necessary to remove dead foliage or spent flower heads as this will retain a healthy and tidy structure.

How to propagate Cordyline

It is possible to propagate Cordyline by seed or alternatively by suckers.
