Convallaria are most commonly referred to as ‘Lily of the Valley’. They are known as the happiness flower and were once used as a liquor to improve common sense and memory. Highly scented and small bell-shaped flowers are presented upon elliptical and ovate leaves, filling your garden with a heavenly sweet fragrance. These delicate blooms are shortly followed by plump red berries after the spring flowering season. They are a great addition if you are looking to under plant shrubs and roses in a cottage or informal garden setting. Convallaria will grow to an optimum height and spread of 25cm (10”).
Convallaria are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH level. Amend the planting area with humus, compost or leaf mould to promote healthy growth and development. Convallaria are best positioned in either full or part shade
Convallaria should be watered thoroughly at the time of planting, ensuring they are kept moist throughout the growing season where they will thrive. Mulch your plant with a generous layer of leaf mould in the autumn to retain moisture levels and to protect the roots and stem from winter wet and frost.
