Clianthus are evergreen shrubs that are mainly noted for their claw or beak shaped flowers that they produce in spring and summer, hence the common name of Kakabeek or lobster claw. They flowers are highly distinctive and unusual. They are native to New Zealand and are considered endangered in the wild. Clianthus are well suited to coastal gardens or a sub-tropical garden style. You should expect to see your Clianthus grow to an approximate height and spread of 2.5-4m (8-13ft).
Clianthus are best planted in a well-drained soil of loam or sand within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. They are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun. Alternatively, they can be grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory.
Protect during winter frosts by applying a thick layer of mulch which will protect the plants roots. In early summer after flowering, remove deadwood and cut back flowered shots by up to a third to establish next year’s flowering framework. Pruning group 11, or 13 if wall-grown.
It is possible to propagate Clianthus by seed, semi-hardwood cuttings or semi-ripe cuttings in summer, depending on the variety.
