Clethra are evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs that are native to swampy and wet areas, ideal for coastal regions. They often fashion attractive and ornate bark, which compliments the small and simplistic glossy green foliage. Fragrant, bell-shaped flowers blossom in panicles, that are preceded by brown seed capsules, creating an unusual shrub with a range of visual attributes during summer. They will grow to an approximate height and spread of 90-120cm (3-4’).
It is best to grow Clethra in moist, well-drained soil of loam, clay and sand within an acidic PH balance. Clethra thrive in a position of full sun, partial shade or full shade, making them a versatile addition to many areas of your garden providing there is plenty of room for them to expand.
Clethra are relatively low maintenance plants where little care is needed. Water Clethra during periods of dry weather as they are intolerant of drought. It is possible to prune these plants without causing any harm to future regrowth and is considered a positive way of revitalizing the shrub after the cold of winter. The best time to undertake pruning would be during the spring where you can remove any dead or weak branches, creating a desired shape and structure as you go along.
