Chlidanthus are large spherical bulbs that originate from South America, namely the Andes Mountains. Their botanical name derives from the Greek word meaning ‘delicate flower’. Huge funnel-shaped and often fragrant blooms with flaring petals can stretch up to 10cm (4”) in width and height. They produce bold and vivid colour upon tall stems and long, strap-shaped foliage during late summer. They make a fantastic addition to pots, within an informal garden setting or in containers within the home. You should expect to see Chlidanthus grow to an approximate height and spread of 25-30cm (10-12”).
Chlidanthus are best planted in well-drained soil with an additional mixture of sand to provide drainage. They are best planted in clusters to create bright splashes of colour and should be displayed in a light and airy environment indoors or in a sheltered position of full sun outdoors with protection from low overnight temperatures.
Throughout the summer, Chlidanthus require a moderate watering schedule, allowing the soil to dry out between applications. Feed your plants on a fortnightly basis whilst in active growth with a standard liquid fertiliser. Chlidanthus will need protection from colder climates and bulbs should be removed and stored in a cool environment over winter.
It is possible to propagate Chlidanthus by removing offsets during the spring.
