About Chionodoxa

Chionodoxa are clump forming bulbous perennials that display wholesome white and dainty star-shaped blooms that appear in early March for about 3 to 4 weeks. A mass of bright blooms are set upon lush, green strap-shaped foliage, perfect for under planting in a cottage or informal garden alongside creating fantastic features in pots and containers. You should expect Chionodoxa to grow to an approximate height of around 15cm (6”).

How to plant Chionodoxa

Chionodoxa are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, loam, sand and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH level. Amend the soil with a generous amount of organic matter such as peat moss, bark or manure which will improve the drainage in your soil. This plant will not thrive in wet and waterlogged conditions. Ensure you have positioned your plant where it will receive full sun or part shade as this is where it will flourish to optimum effect.

How to care for Chionodoxa

After planting your bulbs, water well to settle the surrounding soil. Roots will take hold in the autumn months and you should expect to see buds and flowers in the early spring time. Once the flowering period is over, keep the foliage in tact and do not cut back as the leaves will continue to gather sunlight, strengthening the plant for the following growth period. You should water your Chionodoxa when deemed necessary and in periods of drought. During early summer, the leaves should die back when the plant goes into dormancy, whereby you can remove the foliage.

How to propagate Chionodoxa

It is possible to propagate Chionodoxa by seed sown in pots from within a cold frame when they are ripe.
