Chimonanthus are evergreen or deciduous shrubs with modest leaves and an abundance of intensely fragrant and yellow bowl-shaped flowers. These blooms are produced in the winter months, predominantly between November-March and are preceded by cylindrical seed like capsules. Chimonanthus are best suited to a low maintenance cottage or informal garden, grown against a wall or in a border where the foliage moulds itself into a domed feature. These shrubs can grow to an approximate height of around 3m (10’) and a spread of 1.8 (6’).
Chimonanthus are versatile shrubs and are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, sand, loam or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH level. These shrubs are best positioned in an area exposed to full sunlight, preferably against a sheltered wall to aid in its optimum growth and development. If you are seeking to plant your shrub against a wall or subsequent partition, the planting hole should be large enough to comfortably fit the roots, amending the area with a generous mix of organic matter.
During its first year in the ground, ensure Chimonanthus are watered regularly and that a protective layer of mulch is applied in severely cold weather conditions. After the flowering period, remove old and dead stems to retain a healthy shape and appearance. You may also wish to prune back to the base after flowering to promote continued grow for the following season.
It is possible to propagate Chimonanthus by layering during the summer or by seed.
