Chaenomeles are deciduous shrubs with an intricate framework of slender, spiny branches with simple yet attractive leaves and camellia-like bloom heads. These can form clusters or display as a solitary figure bursting into brilliance during spring. After the flowering period, fragrant yellow or green fruits take the place of faded flowers. These fruits are edible and are best suited to jam making. Suggested areas for these shrubs include banks, slopes, flower beds and borders within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see your Chaenomeles grow to an approximate height of 1.2m (4’) and a spread of 90cm (36”).
Chaenomeles are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Grit or sand should be added to heavy soils as this will enrich the planting area, enabling your plant to grow to optimum effect. They are best positioned in an area of full sun but will tolerate part shade, where it will thrive if trained against a warm wall.
Chaenomeles are low maintenance and easy to care for once they are established. When the flowering period is over, cut back any flowered shoots to younger or stronger shoots and prune back if required when the shrub starts to look untidy or outgrows the planting area. Chaenomeles are relatively drought tolerant but should be watered through prolonged periods of drought.
