About Cerinthe

Cerinthe are annuals, biennials or perennial plants that are often referred to as Honeywort. These unusual looking plants display fleshy grey-green leaves, stately narrow stems and luxuriously, rich coloured blooms that are held together forming impressive pendula clusters throughout the summer. Cerinthe are particularly attractive when planted in flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings alongside creating a great feature piece within pots and containers. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 60cm (24”).

How to plant Cerinthe

Cerinthe are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk and sand within a neutral, acidic and alkaline PH balance. Make sure that all signs of frost have passed before planting them outdoors, digging a hole that is as deep as the root ball, allowing sufficient space between companion plants. Back fill the soil and water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil in place. Cerinthe are best positioned in a sheltered area that has access to full sunlight.

How to care for Cerinthe

Cerinthe will need to be watered regularly until they are fully established and during periods of drought. These plants will self-seed easily and so you may wish to deadhead faded flowers to prevent invasiveness. You may wish to trim back unkempt and untidy stems and foliage to encourage a more compact plant. Stake taller varieties to maintain a pleasing shape and to ensure your plants are relocated when frosts become imminent.

How to propagate Cerinthe

It is possible to propagate Cerinthe by seed sown in light heat during the spring where you can eventually plant out in the garden when the risk of frost has passed.
