About Cercis

Cercis are bushy deciduous shrubs or small trees that fashion an abundance of clustered and nectar filled pea-shaped flowers in the summer followed by flattened, rich purple pods that are set upon heart-shaped leaves. The coloured leaves are bronzed from a young age and transform to yellow tones during the autumn. These are highly popular with a range of wildlife and so expect to see a flurry of bees and butterflies when in flower. These plants can grow to an optimum height and spread of 10m (33’) and would make an attractive addition to a cottage or informal garden.

How to plant Cercis

Grow your Cercis in moist, well-drained soil of loam within acidic, alkaline or neutral PH levels. Choose an appropriate site that will accommodate the mature height and spread of your Cercis to prevent obstruction to companion plants, building and other features. Dig a deep and wide hole that will allow the roots of your Cercis to spread effectively. Cercis are best positioned in either full sun or part shade.

How to care for Cercis

Cercis are a low maintenance plant that requires minimal effort during the season. To retain moisture levels, apply a generous layer of mulch around the base, avoiding the trunk of your shrub or tree. Manage a regular watering schedule whilst the tree is in active growth which can be reduced as it matures. Trim off any dead branches and prune to maintain an attractive shape and to promote continued growth and development.
