About Cercidiphyllum

Cercidiphyllum are a species of large deciduous tree that fashion elliptical leaves, with bronze colourings when young, transforming into red and orange autumnal colourings during the autumn. As winter approaches some varieties release aromatic scents of burnt sugar and toffee apples - the perfect accompanying scent to coincide with the season. Cercidiphyllum is hardy down to -20°C and will grow to a height and spread of approximately 10m (32’). They are best grown in a woodland setting and will create great architectural structure and texture.

How to plant Cercidiphyllum

Cercidiphyllum are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, sand, loam or chalk with an acidic or neutral PH balance. They will thrive in a position of full sun or dappled shade ensuring protection from high winds and adverse weather conditions is adhered to. Cercidiphyllum are also sensitive to frost and will often drop their leaves when the cold weather creeps in.

How to care for Cercidiphyllum

These trees are slow growing, often taking between 20-50 years to reach their optimum height and spread. If planted in an appropriate place, they are relatively low maintenance plants and require very little attention. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture levels and to control the number of weeds. As a young plant, Cercidiphyllum will require regular watering during its first year to encourage health and growth; this can reduce once it is better established. Pruning is not necessary, but you may wish to remove entwined branches or damaged limbs to rectify any misshapen elements of your tree and to retain an attractive structure and shape.

How to propagate Cercidiphyllum

It is possible to propagate Cercidiphyllum by seed, basal or semi-ripe cuttings
