Ceratostigma are bold, structural plants that create an incredible statement feature in your garden. They have woody foliage that transform to a deep shade of red in the autumn alongside bundles of trumpet-like flower heads that bloom from July to September. They are great groundcover plants and look fantastic in borders, cottage gardens and set upon banks and slopes. Ceratostigma will grow to a height of approximately 1m (40”) and a spread of 75cm (30”).
Ceratostigma are best grown in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil of a chalk, clay, sand or loam type within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH level. Dig a hole that is the same depth as the root ball and twice as wide to allow roots to spread. Backfill the planting area and water thoroughly and deeply. Ceratostigma will develop at an optimum rate if planted in a sheltered spot with access to full sunlight.
Ceratostigma need to be kept moist as a young plant and through active growth, ensuring not to overwater as it resents high levels of moisture. Ensure to protect young shoots from frost, or cut back during the winter months. If shoots are damaged during cold weather, remove them during the spring time whilst tidying shoots that are astray to retain a healthy and pleasant shape.
